Synaptic categorises types of products using a three-tier hierarchy:

| Sub-type(or “basis”) | e.g. Cash ISA, Stocks & Shares ISA, Purchased life annuity, Unit-linked regular-premium personal pension |
Research within the system is conducted at sub-type level (also referred to as “basis”). In other words, you research unit-linked regular-premium personal pensions, rather than just personal pensions.
However, customers who have bought the advanced version of the system do have the ability to carry out research at type-level.
